Why do you carry two 4-irons

My friend doesn’t like it and prefers a hybrid, so he gave it to me. It has a lower loft too

Did he think it was a wedge
@wakio
That might explain why he doesn’t like it

He was trying to flop shot with a 4 iron and overshooting it by 170 past the green

I’ve had a few clubs like that before. I had one from an old set that I liked. Especially the higher irons, I bet one acts like a driving iron
@Jensen
I kept a 5 wood from a Sears golf set I bought back in ’94 that I could hit 200 straight for 15 years. But then I wanted to be a real golfer and got rid of it. Now I just lay up with a 6 iron and have no idea where it’s going

That 4 is so bad I didn’t get this comment until later. But maybe that says more about me than anything
I once hit a 9-iron instead of a 6-iron. Fortunately, I made the best contact and ended up in a greenside bunker. If I had hit the 6-iron with that good contact, I would have cleared the green and possibly ended up in the road behind it.
Looking back, I’m not sure why I was aiming for the 6
@Clancy
My 6-iron range is anywhere from 80 to 235…well, honestly, that goes for all my clubs. I’m not sure what I’m saying here

I’m convinced my thought process was, ‘I’m hitting from the desert, making good contact is tough. It’s 165 to cover the bunker, and my 7 goes 170 so I’ll step up and swing soft with the 6.’ Then I looked at the loft and thought this feels like a full swing and ended up hitting a 9-iron 160y (normally it’s 145y)
@Clancy
Recently, I teed off at a par 3 of 145 yards to the center of the green. The group ahead was getting in their carts left of the hole, a solid 160 yards out. I thought my 9-iron would land me near the pin. I ended up blading that shot right at them yelling ‘Fore!’ and it zoomed just over their cart, landing a good 175+ yards from where I hit it. I’ve never apologized that quickly or sincerely before. A 175-yard 9-iron? What?!
Now I’m waiting for people to clear completely, even 30+ yards past my shots. My max hitting that club was about 150. I checked my club afterward just to confirm it was my 9-iron.
@Sam
I feel you! Last round, a par 3 was 185 yards away. I took my 4 wood thinking a smooth swing. It landed on the green, happy times.
I did the same for the next hole and it went 235 yards. Can someone explain that
@Zane
Those perfectly hit shots with ideal spin and launch conditions are incredible. It must be such a thrill to be a pro and have those kinds of shots regularly. I once hit a smooth hybrid for 260 total, even though it’s usually a 215-225 total club for me
@Clancy
Exactly. The idea of a club consistently going the same distance is so foreign to me. You start to appreciate how skilled the pros are.
I watched some of Bryson’s videos where he guesses his yardage to the yard. It’s crazy.

You might want to consider quitting the game
@Gentry
Why would I do that
@Clancy
It’s all the magic of golf
@Clancy
I made the opposite mistake from about 150 yards out. I was all over the flag until it hit the roof of the clubhouse. Glanced down and saw I used my 6-iron instead
That was quite the walk up the fairway, passing guys enjoying their post-round beers on the way to the parking lot
