US players to be paid £400k for playing in Ryder Cup

@Zyler
That’s a nice sentiment and I agree, but the reality is that there’s a lot of money involved in this event and those who generate the revenue deserve to be compensated. Because if they’re not getting paid, someone else is.

I’m not about to cry for these guys, but they’re the ones we’re here to see. Compensate them.

For some reason, I’m assuming jealousy, people hate it when pro athletes get their share of the revenues they’re generating. Why should these guys do their job for free when each Ryder Cup generates hundreds of millions in revenues?

Exactly. I’m not sure why this has been so controversial. The players are the ones who add value to this event. Yet they’ve not been paid for it, while the PGA of America makes many millions of dollars on the event every time.

I don’t think people have a problem with players getting paid.

I think it’s the outrageous ticket prices and the fact that the players had to make a stand to get paid, while the PGA and its partners were already making a good deal of money off the event, makes the whole situation feel kinda gross.

It’s tough to listen to players complain about not getting paid when fans have to pony up huge chunks of money to see the event when all of us would kill to be in the players’ position.

But that doesn’t mean the players should lay down and sit idly by while all this money is being raked in.

It’s just a gross greedy situation.

Just my thoughts.

@Sage
The cost of the event isn’t the players’ fault. They have nothing to do with that.

I agree, but it’s hard to get a lot of sympathy from fans when it’s people from the 1% arguing it out.

I’m on the players’ side on this, but like the comment I replied to, it’s not fun to hear about these guys complain about money.

@Sage
Word.

I think people get confused because these guys are rich.

But they’re the workers in this situation. Advocating for them to get paid is a pro-worker stance.

That’s a fairly reasonable bonus for making, effectively, the league’s all-star game and having to play an extra week.

Having to play?

They desperately want to play; it’s a fun weekend.

So what? They’re bringing in a fuck ton of revenue and they deserve their fair share. If they want to donate their cut, good on ‘em.

How do you square this desperation you’ve heard of with the change to compensate them?

Yanks always finding a way to ruin the integrity of sports to cash in.

This will only lead to more expensive ticket prices, and prices are already a fucking joke for the Ryder Cup—continue to not pay players and cut the prices of tickets and food and beverages instead.

@Chase
Idiotic.

This is the same bullshit excuse that bootlickers use to justify underpaying fast food workers.

“If they’re making $20 an hour, how much is my burger going to cost?!?=".

That’s what’ll make the guys take it seriously and drive game engagement. More money. Just look at the NBA ratings after doing everything they can to cater to the players; it surely worked for them.

Wait…

I humbly offer my services for the bargain price of £200K and a sleeve of official Ryder Cup balls.

I’m gonna need about 6 sleeves to get through a round at once of these courses.

Who does this hurt?

The public who have to pay $700 a ticket, probably more after this.
