Two Golfers Got Into This Week's PGA Tour Event in Utah Because of a Mistake Crazy Right

Wow! Two of them scoring 64’s is really impressive

So four guys made it into the Monday qualifier and two of them qualified. I think they earned it

There are tons of talented golfers out there. Getting a real shot is probably the hardest part. There are many levels where you need to play your best all the time

No way they deserve it. They knew they weren’t allowed in the Monday qualifier. They should have played in the pre-qualifier tournament. There are plenty of hardworking golfers whose only chance to get into tournaments is through qualifying. These are people’s livelihoods. Everyone else plays by the rules. They should feel ashamed

@Sam
A good counterpoint is they might know a lot about the course and could play poorly if the qualifier was somewhere else.

The Monday qualifier for Torrey Pines used to be at El Camino CC, which is a completely different kind of golf course, and you’d see players struggle there because the course was harder than Torrey, and they might choke at Torrey

@Shea
But who’s that counterpoint aimed at? Pre-qualifiers exist to filter out those who waste time and to maintain the quality of the field. Otherwise, any fraud could pay to enter a Monday qualifier and shoot 98, forcing their playing partners to deal with it

Nobody wants to do pre-qualifying, so if everyone could skip ahead for any reason, everyone would do it

I was hoping this would be about two local guys who thought they had a tee time booked and just showed up without anyone noticing

Dude 1: Golfnow had a hot deal tee time at 1pm Thursday. I grabbed it.

Dude 2: Isn’t there a tournament happening?

Dude 1: Who cares? Hot deal tee times can’t be refunded. They have to let us play

I’m laughing at the thought of them teeing off from the White tees while the crowd is back by the tips

There’s a movie based on a true story about a guy named Maurice Flitcroft who had never played golf before but decided to try to win The British Open after losing his job.

He was terrible but managed to sneak into the Open several times.

The movie is called The Phantom of the Open and it’s a great, easy watch. Definitely recommend

Imagine if one of them wins and gets on the tour regularly because of this

Sounds like a movie plot

That’s great! I hope the two guys who got in will make the cut

Forget it, I hope one of them wins

If a guy can walk on and shoot -8 (64) and beat the others, he’s worthy and could win the tournament if he keeps playing like that

I mean maybe - it’s possible this course is their home course and they play it all the time, which could be unfair

@Tali
Why would that be unfair? Anyone can practice on any course as much as they want

Because most people in Monday qualifiers don’t have that luxury right? They usually fly across the country to try to compete and qualify as much as they can - not just playing one course over and over and sneaking on

Even with the new starting rules, pros can’t really do it

@Tali
This is completely possible not sure why the downvotes
