Watson most definitely had the short putt yips.
I remember he had the rep of ramming in short putts. I wonder if the ever-increasing green speeds were an issue.

@Spencer
He was always a good lag putter, which makes me think green speeds weren’t the issue.
@Spencer
Probably not, as he slumped in the late 80s and early 90s, then had a resurgence in the late 90s when he was pushing 50.
@Spencer
It doesn’t seem feasible, but Tiger being the oldest player to ever win a major in a few years seems like a very Tiger Woods thing to happen.
@Sage
That fucking ball should’ve stayed on that fucking green.
@Sage
DUde hit an 8 iron from like 160+ yards. Hit a downslope and off it went. Insane.
@Sage
That bounce was ridiculous.
@Sage
I don’t think he would have two-putted from 20 feet. Watson was feeling the nerves, and his putting was gone.
@Sage
I remember the announcers were saying ‘do anything but don’t go long!’ and advised Watson to use an 8 iron. Then he pulls out the 7 iron and lets ‘er rip.

It looked like he wanted to two-putt to ensure he got in the playoff. It was such a stub. Insane pressure. Not meant to be.

He was completely out of gas. It was obvious watching. 72 holes at his age with that much pressure… it was just too much.
Ug, that one still hurts.

It hurt making this post. I never wanted someone, including myself, to make par so badly.
I’ll never forget watching this unfold. This was when I first started playing and caught the bug. I would watch golf and the Golf Channel religiously. I was pulling for Tom so much that day, the way it played out on 18 was tough to watch. He played so well the whole week, smh. Tough one to forget.
Wasn’t televised yesterday at Pebble, but Lee Hodges quad bogeyed the final hole. Took him from 12th to 33rd, I believe. I bet on him to finish top 20.

Hopefully your legacy will not be tarnished.
@Darby
It’s a tough road ahead, but I see a bright future filled with more poor gambling decisions…
Disclaimer: In very small amounts. Don’t gamble what you can’t afford to lose, kids.
Was this the one he hit long on 72nd hole and couldn’t get up and down? It was so tragic and I still think of it from time to time.

That’s the one. He gave himself a decent putt. I think about it at least five times a year and every single British Open. I feel like I missed the putt.
I remember at the time people saying how bad it would be for golf if someone that old could win one of the most important tournaments. As a junior, I thought how great it would be if someone that old could win! Just goes to show how great golf is when you can be competitive for such a long time. It was genuinely one of the only times I really wanted something to happen in sports, and it was heartbreaking to watch it unfold.
