This was one of two times my wife was ever interested in a golf tournament. When he said he flew that 8(?) iron because he thought he was excited, I just felt so sad. I think about this tournament regularly to this day.
I wasn’t into golf at all at this point and was glued to the coverage. Absolutely gutted when he fell short.
I vividly remember when I was working at a golf course in Maple Valley, WA watching that final round and hearing groans from the bar, driving range, and the employee lounge after he missed on 18… just absolutely tragic.
I just remember Cink’s Wikipedia article was heavily vandalized in the hours following his win.

Cink, for me and others I assume, will always be associated with cough cough stealing the Open from Watson.
Remember watching that live, almost as bad as Scotty blowing his lead in the 2012 Open.
That one hurt. That was for history. Man…
It’s called The Open.
