Background: I’m about a 25HCP and have been playing around 1.5y. I have been playing the Strata set and wanted to finally upgrade to better clubs anyway, so decided to get fit.
Went to get fit at a local fitting shop, which has you hitting onto the actual driving range but still has Trackman. Best of both worlds.
Wedges: First thing I appreciated was the fitter immediately told me he wasn’t going to fit me into new wedges because mine were working just fine for me (Callaway Mack Daddy, the only clubs I have bought.) The only thing he recommended was to include a GW with my iron set to help with gapping.
Irons: Tried a bunch of different irons but kept coming back to the Mizuno JPX925 HMs. I was hitting the 7i 170, which is about 30 yards further than I hit mine. Better dispersion, launch angle, descent angle, and spin rates. Fit me into 5-GW.
Hybrids: The hybrids I hit best were actually the Ping G430s. I historically have not hit my hybrids well, and I was STRIPING these out to like 190-200 on the 4. Ended up going with 3 and 4H.
Woods: For gapping reasons, while we considered 5 and 7 woods, we settled on 3. I normally cannot hit my 3W to save my life. After trying basically every model, it was obvious the Ping G430 Max was the club. Consistently hitting it out to 220, felt like I could not miss.
Unexpected Driver: The driver is kind of my nemesis. For obvious reasons, I expected the Ping G430 Max to also be my driver. It was definitely not. I could not hit that thing at all. We tried a bunch of other “forgiving drivers,” and finally, perhaps out of desperation, he handed me a Taylormade Qi10 Tour LS. Suddenly I was hitting big (for me) shots out to 260. Great numbers, and better performance (with seemingly no loss in consistency) than the Max version. I found this really weird, but he says sometimes it’s just down to the individual swing.
Overall, I am super happy with my fitting and can’t wait to get my clubs. Didn’t expect to end up with a three-way split, but those are the clubs that worked.
