Pretty cool shoot of what hole 13 used to look like. No date on the postcard, but after researching the photographer it seems the photo was taken in the 1950s or 1960s.
I love old photos of Augusta National where it looks like a regular nice golf course instead of oddly perfect hallowed ground.

Me too. It’s obviously beautiful in its current state, but I love seeing the old character the course used to have.

The contrast is especially clear with Augusta, but just generally looking at old golf photos it’s pretty clear the game has changed dramatically with conditioning.
Some of the slopes on greens were so interesting and dramatic and now we can’t have anything close to that with modern green speeds. The length of fairway grass also allowed for crazier slopes there too and interesting hanging lies. It allowed for so much more variety in course design and having played some links style courses with extremely firm surfaces big slopes like that are so much fun to play with.
@Marlo
That’s absolutely right. The obsession with green speed has caused the renovation/loss of so many historic green complexes. I hadn’t thought about the length of fairway grass but that’s a great point.

I wonder how much high definition TV coverage has made these courses try to make everything look the way it is now?
@Tatum
Augusta started botoxing the shit out of itself long before HDTV was a thing.

Looks like a real golf course compared to the Disney production modern Augusta has become.
I kinda prefer some of the shagginess.
Looks a lot more natural, I prefer that look
It almost looks like CGI these days.

Plus, superintendents at courses that are for the merely wealthy rather than billionaire oligarchs get bombarded every April with “why doesn’t our course look like that?” from the members.
@Fern
Funny how a lot of top courses did this exact thing. Then along comes Gil Hanse in the past decade restoring a ton of these courses to the original architect’s intent. Pretty much everyone agrees they look significantly better post-resto. LACC is a notable example.
@Lyric
It has been really cool to see this recent wave of big-time restorations. One of my favorite courses I played this year was Southern Pines Golf Club in Southern Pines, NC. Kyle Franz’s work to restore the old Donald Ross design is amazing.
This is a crazy angle of 13 I’ve never seen a pic from. Really gives you a better view of how large that green is. I could 5 putt that thing right now!

Yeah it almost looks a little like 12 from here. I knew it was 13, but man, this is a fun pic.

Hahaha that is so true. It’s pretty massive.
Nice throwback!
Has a 1966 look to it.
I love how yellow this photo is. I’m assuming that’s just the age of the postcard, but it looks super cool.

Probably has to do with the film the photo was shot on and the age of the postcard itself. I didn’t alter the colors in any way. I love it too.
