Very interesting comparison of 3 styles of irons at 70MPH swing speed

I’d love the TL;DR, please.

Essentially he’s saying there is not as much of a difference in results for the three types of irons, basically going against the conventional thought that game improvement are better/easier for a slow swing. He also does mishits on the toe and the heel to show similar results in ‘forgiveness’. They all drop off in a similar way. Distance differences are mostly because of the difference in loft.

@Sam
So you’re saying us hackers should go get blades? :eyes:

With xtra-stiff steel shafts. And a 7 degree driver.

But is that a negative angle of attack or?!

@Dev
Would that just be an angle of defense?

I have blades and the modern kind are not hard to hit, at all. Can only comment from 5 iron to PW, don’t carry a 3 or 4.

@Will
Can confirm. Play 245s and recently picked up a set of Blueprint Ts just to see if I could. If you’re even a semi-decent ball striker, you can go either way. I’ve been playing the Ts more lately because I find they’re more predictable. The downside is a slight loss of distance but that can be attributed to the loft difference.

@Morgan
My actual scoring is getting better since switching fully to blades.

@Nash
The MP60 isn’t a blade.

They said ‘like’ blades.

@Will
I never broke 100 then yoloed blades for fun and broke it twice lol.

Doing the math, you can see that the GI irons are about 20-30% more forgiving on toe shots and heel shots if you calculate it based on percentage distance loss instead of numbers of yards lost. There’s pretty much zero difference between the blades and player’s distance irons though.

He also has an absurdly slow swing. I’m not sure you’re getting great data when every 7 iron barely goes 130yds.

I believe his speed was around 70mph.

@Hollis
Agreed. Especially when loft is often recommended for slower swing speeds as they don’t have the speed to create the spin to get the launch they need for distance. I’d wanna see the swing speed closer to 80s.

@Hollis
He was dialing it down on purpose. He does that in a lot of his videos - can swing at 70 then 80 then 90 etc. Tries to demonstrate what an average older player can do, for example.

@Hollis
130? That’s a 7 and a half brother.

The person who did my fitting wanted to put me in blades because my miss is an overdraw. I needed to have as little offset as possible. He also said that there isn’t much difference between blades and game improvement irons in terms of a mishit nowadays. But I didn’t want to be a 14 handicapper with blades. So we eventually with something in the middle. I regret not getting the blades; they looked so good.
