I recently picked up a set of Callaway Steelhead X14 Irons (3-9), wedges (PW, SW), and a Callaway Big Bertha 9° driver for $40 second-hand. The clubs are in pristine condition—no rust, no chips, and they look almost like new.
I’m curious, was this a good buy? It feels like a steal, but I’d love to hear your thoughts or if anyone has experience with this set.
Some are saying it’s a fair deal, but $40 for a full set of irons down to a sand wedge in good condition? That’s a steal! The trade-in value is about $46, so most places would likely sell a set like this for $100-$120.
This is a GREAT deal. A full set of quality irons should last you for ages. Those saying it’s just ‘fair’? Seriously, what would make it a ‘great’ deal? The seller should owe them money? LMAO
As for the BB driver? It might be outdated, but if it still works, why not!
In high school, our number one player used these irons and won state two years straight ('01 and '02). He even played pro and was the low club pro at the 2018 PGA.

If I had to guess, it was either Mike Small or Rod Perry. Rod trained under the same pro as me, so I knew him well, but the guy I’m talking about never made it to the PGA Championship, though he totally had the talent. He just chose a more stable job for family reasons. Played with him last May, and he still breaks par pretty easily.

My cousin is a scratch player and used to rock these clubs. They were the only Callaway irons that I didn’t think were blades and actually liked the look of.

Rich Beem won the 2002 PGA Championship with these! I played with them for 15 years and still use them when I hit par 3s with my kids. I’ve got 13 clubs when I include the 1-LW, just wish there was a long enough hole to try out the old 1-iron again. Sad to say, since the grandfather period ended for wedge grooves, they’re technically illegal now, even though I doubt mine have any grip left.
Gamers for years—upgraded to a new set just last month. Actually hit the 9-iron and loved the feel in my sim last night. These clubs provide great feedback, and when you hit them clean, it feels amazing. With newer irons having stronger lofts, I’m keeping the PW in my bag for spacing.
I just sold my similar irons a few weeks ago. Here are my average distances:
180 yards on the 3-iron
170 yards on the 4-iron
160 yards on the 5-iron
150 yards on the 6-iron
140 yards on the 7-iron
130 yards on the 8-iron
120 yards on the 9-iron
110 yards on the PW
Decent clubs! More suited for someone with a 5-10 handicap. The construction is like muscle cavity or CB irons. The 3-iron can be tricky for me, so I use a hybrid or a modern 4-iron that I hit further.
