Presidential Golf and the Secret Service Challenge

For decades it was easier because presidents mostly played on courses on military bases. Bush and Obama played a majority of their golf on Andrews AFB and Ft Belvoir, with occasional visits to Army-Navy or Congressional.

Except Dwight Eisenhower who played at Augusta and in Palm Springs. He was a golfing president legend. Clint Hill wrote about how he and other Secret Service agents would be in the foursome around Eisenhower, carrying AR machine guns in their bags.

Yeah, the clubs Eisenhower went to eventually built rooms for the Secret Service to work out of when he visited.

Eisenhower also played at Fitzsimmons in Denver. They tore that course out a couple of years ago, but I played there several times before that.

I have a friend at Army-Navy. He says Obama’s short game is impressive.

True, the exception being when they go on vacation. Clinton and Obama played on Martha’s Vineyard at Farm Neck, which poses a risk being a daily-fee course with access from houses and streets.

It’s not a big security threat when a president plays an unannounced round of golf at various courses. No way a gunman is going to camp out at Congressional for weeks just in case. They’d probably be spotted anyway. Military courses are even safer because the base general has the area secured.

In fairness to the Secret Service and Trump, this gunman might have actually waited at Congressional for weeks. He’s literally crazy.

Zero chance anyone could spend that much time in a sniper nest without being noticed. They’d need to be very lucky to pick the right time and not get caught.

Some people think the gunman waiting for Trump on the golf course proves it was an inside job. Like who could have guessed?

The president should have to book municipal tee times every now and then.

Why not just build a big beautiful wall around the course?

Trump is gonna be Trump.

I wouldn’t mind Trump golfing if he hadn’t said things like this before taking office:

  • ‘President Obama’s vacation is costing taxpayers millions. Unbelievable!’
  • ‘Can you believe that with all the problems facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf? Worse than Carter.’
  • ‘I’m going to work for you, not have time to play golf.’

Ah, you’re right about hypocrisy in politics. Definitely a Trump thing. Lol.

Also, he’s not in office currently.

He played a lot more golf than Obama while in office.
