My McIlroy Encounter

Lol that’s great. Back in 2013, Rory was the second most popular golfer after Tiger.

That was around the time he was on the cover of EA’s game.

Mickelson was probably still more popular back then too.

It’d be like not acknowledging Carlos Alcaraz.

Rory was only 24 in 2013 and had already won a couple of majors. He had even been #1 in the world and was thought to be the next dominant player. He would win two majors in 2014.

Alcaraz is younger, but the comparison fits.

I met Rory years ago on New Year’s Eve in a pub in Hoboken, NJ. He was 21 and not that famous yet. I approached him, complimented his game and mentioned I saw him at Ridgewood for the Barclays. He was really cool.

@Dustin
That’s cool! A quick chat, and you let him enjoy his evening without bothering him too much.

A similar thing happened with my wife and Rory at TPC. She was backstage for a concert and someone joked with her about getting an autograph. She brushed it off, not realizing it was Rory McIlroy! She learned later that night, and while she doesn’t regret skipping the autograph, she felt bad for dismissing him.

Like asking Nadal to take a picture of you and Nelly Korda.

I hope Rafa takes good pictures then.

Golfers don’t always get recognized. Scottie Scheffler, the number one golfer, got arrested this year without recognition. The cop was stressed and didn’t recognize him.

Lmao, the cop was outside a pro golf event!

@Luca
Cops typically have a good eye for these things.

This is their first mistake.

He definitely misread the situation.

@Luca
And Scottie was driving a player-issued vehicle.

@Thorne
I never said anything about spending the night in jail. Thanks for agreeing with me!

How did he get no sleep? He was only detained for a brief period.

I misspoke about the timeline, thanks!

True, but he wasn’t on no sleep; he played shortly after his detainment.

Thanks for clarifying.

Nice guy or not, he won’t win another major until he reconciles with Wozniacki.
