Let me start by saying, I know next to nothing about golf. I’ve never played the game, never watched a tournament, and couldn’t name a single pro (up until that day). But back in 2013, I was a massive tennis fan.
In the summer of 2013, I was in New York City with my family for the US Open tennis tournament. While walking through Central Park, I spotted a familiar face—Caroline Wozniacki, walking with some guy. I was only 20 at the time, and Wozniacki was a well-known name in tennis, so I was immediately excited.
I couldn’t help myself, and I approached her, asking if she would take a photo with me and my mom. She graciously agreed, and as I turned to arrange for the shot, I asked the guy with her if he could take the photo for us. He smiled and said, “Of course,” then snapped a few pictures before we all went our separate ways.
Later, someone pointed out who that guy was—it was none other than Rory McIlroy.
Now, if this needed explaining to someone familiar with tennis, how does Rory’s fame in golf compare to Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, or the others? And how big of a mistake was it to not include him in that photo?
