Erin Hills is the Best Golf Experience in the Midwest

When you arrive at Erin Hills, a valet greets you and takes your bags while you go check out the clubhouse. It’s a perfect start to your trip.

Next, you walk to the outdoor patio to see a stunning view of the championship golf course. As soon as I saw it, I was excited to play!

We stayed close to the first tee in a beautiful room. Erin Hills has a huge 64,000 square foot putting green for nighttime fun… This experience was amazing. It’s the biggest green I’ve ever seen!

Finally, we got on the course, but not to play golf …we were there to film a documentary… Seeing the course from a drone is incredible. The views from above are breathtaking, showing just how beautiful this place really is.

Yes! To be honest, I was shocked by how much great golf is in Wisconsin.

Do you have a favorite course in Wisconsin?

Low key great course is the links course at Lawsonia.

I’ve played there several times. It is a good course, but I think it’s overrated. In my opinion, it isn’t close to Erin Hills, any of the Kohler courses, SentryWorld, or the courses at Sand Valley.

It was $125 at Lawsonia and Erin was $260 and Whistling Straits was $350, so I don’t know that they should be evaluated on the same scale.

Kohler is king. Some of the best courses in the country, especially at Whistling Straits. I played the Straits; it’s super hard and fun with gorgeous views off Lake Michigan.

Kohler is good, but it’s overrated and overpriced compared to some other courses nearby.

Whistling Straits is $750 a person to play, and is good, but not great.

Geneva National an hour south has 3 courses, a Trevino and a Palmer course that are both public, and the Palmer has 3-4 holes on the shore of the lake, costing $120 to play.

Mammoth Dunes is also insane.

Half the muni courses in Wisconsin are beautiful and cost $50 to play.

For $750 you could almost go round trip from Wisconsin to Banff, Canada, and play Banff National in the mountains, and still spend less than the cost of a single round at Whistling.

$750? It was $450 and that was with a caddy when I played it 3 years ago. Torrey Pines was $400, and Pebble is $500. The Straits is in the ballpark for top 25 rated public courses, those 3 are generally the highest priced, so I’ll give you that, the prices are ridiculous. I’ve been trying to add highly ranked public courses to my resume, so I do a lot of research, and usually don’t see any course close to Pebble, most are in the $200-$400 range.

Went to play last month. $750, and it includes a caddy but not the tip.

Hot damn… yeah that’s dumb. You could do a golf getaway package for that. I wouldn’t pay $750; I even questioned the $450. It’s ridiculous pricing for a single round, even if it’s a top 5 ranked course.

Lol, good luck getting a hotel room for under $300 though.

Washington County is close to Erin Hills and is often described as a mini Erin Hills.

Lawsonia Links is very popular but absolutely fantastic. It used to be a hidden gem but is so good even after the price hike.

A couple of hidden gems a little further south are Spring Valley CC (public) and Eagle Springs. Spring Valley CC is a Langford and Moreau design that’s a bit rough but has fantastic design and architecture. Eagle Springs is a quirky 9-hole course with a fun volcano hole.

If you think Erin Hills is that great, you have to get to Kohler. Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits are a step above Erin.

Lol, no they are not. Price is the only thing that’s stepped up at Kohler compared to Erin.

That’s so subjective. Also, just having 4 distinct courses is a huge advantage. Blackwolf River is my favorite course in the state. It chews me up every time but it’s incredible.

The only Blackwolf River course worth playing is either the original routing or the championship routing. And Kohler knows it too. They never offer either course for tournament play as they are.

I’ve played neither. It’s hard to imagine there are significant steps above courses that have hosted major championships.

I’d wager both courses are a 9/10, and the last point is subjective. I’d love to play them both someday.
