Does anyone remember "teeing up" gas carts to cancel out the governor?

When I was a young man I worked in the bag room at the Country Club. For large events we needed extra carts, and would rent gas powered ones. The older kids had a trick that involved inserting a golf tee in the engine that would negate the governor - and man would they haul! I looked on YT, and I see people doing it with a zip tie, but not the tee trick I remember. I wasn’t really sure where else to ask, lol - cheers all!

Yeah this is still a thing. We have Yamaha gas carts at our place (a fleet of 73) and we have to teach our cart kids to look out for this. The irony is that it’s probably our cart kids that DO this

Speaking from experience as a cart attendant, it is 100% the cart attendants.

@Jae
Lol yeah. It’s a double edged sword for sure. I went from finding one per month (last year) to finding one or two PER WEEK (this year). I’m like “there’s no way in hell that many people know about this and play this consistently here”

@Riley
Social media could be to blame. I didn’t know anything about this until I saw it on TikTok or whatever a few times.

I worked our back shop 23 years ago, every member knew how to do this, pretty sure everyone in our 7500 person town knew how to do this.

Carts were flying, great times

@Jae
Came here to agree with this.

dude they do like 35 for reals

@Daryl
Yep. I remember doing it close to 30 years ago on the Yamaha carts. 35 is not exaggerating. But it wasn’t boom fast, it took a good run to get up to speed, but it just was full open the whole time

Lol, no clue but we were MOVIN. Each 9 had 3 coolers. Between cart paths and the maintenance paths through the woods, it got spicy a few times

RIP water coolers on the course.

@Jae
Yeah my dad was the superintendent at a public course and the mechanic taught a 7 year old me how to do this :joy:

Not my fault kids today aren’t more creative and have to resort to doing the same stupid shit I was doing 18 years ago. (:

I was a cart kid. We did this

Every Wednesday, there was a race between myself and my buddy. The carts were 18 and 27, and they somehow always managed to end up in the back away from the others… Hehe

I’d lap the back 9, and he’d lap the front 9. Winner bought the other a large range bucket at full price.
