When Should I Change Swing Weight?

Hello …I’ve been playing golf for a while, but I’ve never really thought about swing weight—always considered it to be too advanced for me. However, after swinging a heavier tube recently (much heavier than a golf club), I realized that it really helped me get a better sense of my swing and where I was in the motion.

I’m not sure what my swing speed is; I just know I tend to go full speed all the time. During a driver fitting a couple of years ago, the guy mentioned I was hitting over 190 mph ball speed. That’s great, but I often mess up my timing, and I end up hitting the ball way too far in the wrong direction.

I’m wondering if switching to a heavier swing weight might help me control my tempo better. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind sacrificing a bit of distance if it means I can finally get some consistency in my game.

For those of you who have experience adjusting swing weight, do you find it helps you feel where the club is during your swing? Is it primarily for performance, or does it really aid in controlling swing tempo?

Shaft technology is seriously cool! I’ve got a Tensei 75-gram stiff shaft that gives me a nice low kickpoint with super low spin. Then there’s my 50-gram KBS senior flex, which has a mid launch and low spin. They both hit about the same distance but feel totally different, and I love them both…

My clubs always felt heavy, like there was too much weight in the head. After getting a fitting, they actually added weight to the grip end, and now they feel way more balanced. I’m not sure what the swing weight was before, but I’m guessing it was around D3. Now it’s D0, and they feel awesome! Definitely recommend getting a fitting…

Ok the message im getting is shaft weight is more key for swing weight than just adding weight to the head. And the only way to get that right is with professional fitting.

Shaft flex/kickpoint is also relevant, a shaft with a kickpoint towards the head might make it feels heavier.

Swing weight is really all about feel and tempo. If your swing speed is super fast, you might benefit from using heavier static weights with heavier shafts, which can help stabilize your swing.

For example, try 70 to 80 grams for your driver and 80 to 90 grams for your fairway woods. It’s not impossible for your ball speed to reach 190, but it’s unlikely, especially if you’re hitting all over the place.

I know a couple of guys who swing in that range, and they’re both pros who absolutely crush it. You wouldn’t even guess they swing at 130 if you watched them. Definitely get fitted and try out some heavier shafts…

I have a pretty fast swing (115-120 club head) and went from a 75g shaft down to a 65g. I don’t think heavier necessarily means more control. but the answer is to get a fitting from a reputable location.

I’m not saying the guy lied, but the average ball speed on the PGA Tour is around 171 mph. Cameron Champ had the highest average at 188 mph.

Like the other guy said, you definitely need to get fitted to find out what works best for you

Go get fitted! No one can give you the right answer until you try out all the shafts yourself.
