I’ve been seeing a lot of discussions about iron covers lately, and it seems like they’re often frowned upon or even made fun of. I recently got a set and was thinking about using them to keep my clubs protected, but I’m curious why some golfers look down on them.
Is it just a matter of tradition, or is there something specific that makes them unpopular? Are there any performance drawbacks to using them? I’d love to hear your thoughts and maybe some personal experiences.
Because people are idiots and need to feel superior to other people. The only cover I use is on my driver but I see nothing wrong with iron covers if you want to use them.
I use iron covers on my Cleveland Launchers because they’re chunky and basically hybrids. I don’t like the sound of them hitting each other, plus they look better with the covers on. No one has commented on them, and if they did, I’d just tell them to mind their own business. Everyone has their own preferences. If you like using iron covers, go for it! If you don’t, that’s fine too. If people give you a hard time about it, that’s their issue, not yours.
As a former caddie, I absolutely hate iron covers (and tour bags). I’ve never seen a good player using iron covers, and 99% of the time, if a player has them, they’re cheap and probably won’t tip.
When you walk out to the range and see someone with a tour bag and iron covers, you just know it’s going to be a long day. They’re likely cheap and can’t play well at all.
Everyone assumes they’re just for protection. I use mine in my travel bag when flying for that reason, but on the course, I just hate the clacking sounds.
