What State has the Most Golf Courses?

Hey all, me and my buddies are planning a guys’ golf getaway this year. We’re looking for a place with plenty of courses to choose from, so we can all find something that suits our skill levels. I remember vaguely hearing Florida has a ton of courses, but are there any other states that come close? Maybe somewhere with a bit more variety in terms of scenery, or perhaps better deals on tee times? Any golfers out there who’ve done multi-course trips in the US? Where did you go, and how was the experience?
Thanks in advance for the tips! Looking forward to hearing about your golfing adventures!

I was looking up the location of the next Ryder Cup in the United States after seeing the last one. Then, when I was looking through the surrounding map, I noticed this region, which appears to have a ludicrous number of courses (20 total; the map above is roughly 70 square miles).

Florida is renowned as a golfer’s paradise with numerous courses, yet there are several other exceptional options across the United States for your golf getaway, depending on your preferences:

Scenic Diversity:

Arizona: Offers breathtaking desert courses set against mountain vistas. Cities like Scottsdale and Phoenix feature a wide array of courses with varying levels of difficulty. Additionally, outdoor activities like hiking and jeep tours complement the golfing experience.
California: From the rolling hills of Napa Valley to the iconic Pacific Ocean views of Pebble Beach, California offers diverse landscapes and globally acclaimed courses. Be mindful that costs may be higher compared to other destinations.
Mountainous Regions:

North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia: These states provide picturesque mountain backdrops paired with top-tier golf courses. Some resorts offer comprehensive packages that include golf and additional recreational activities.
Multiple Course Options and Deals:

Carolinas and Georgia: Known for a blend of scenic courses and potential cost savings compared to California. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is particularly popular for its variety of affordable golf courses.
Texas Hill Country: Austin and San Antonio’s Texas Hill Country is gaining recognition for its excellent golf courses at reasonable rates, catering to both championship-level layouts and more relaxed, distinctive courses.
Midwestern Options:

Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin: While not characterized by dramatic landscapes, these states boast numerous quality courses, often at more affordable prices, especially away from major urban centers.

A few years ago, my friends and I planned a golf trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It’s known as the “Golf Capital of the World” with over 100 courses in the area. Each day, we played a different course ranging from challenging layouts to more relaxed resort-style setups. The variety was fantastic, catering to all our skill levels and preferences. The weather was great, and we enjoyed the coastal scenery and vibrant nightlife after our rounds.

North Dakota boasts the highest per capita number of golf courses, but this doesn’t guarantee universal access. With approximately one course per 5,468 people and only one course per 561 square miles, North Dakota ranks 42nd in terms of course accessibility, necessitating potentially long drives to reach a course.

In contrast, Rhode Island stands out with a golf course available for every 18 square miles of land, highlighting a stark contrast in accessibility. In fact, 19 states have a golf course density of one course for every 100 square miles or less.
