With advice to move up a tee box being given to amateurs, what’s your comfortable course length?
For me, 63/6500 yards is my comfortable distance. According to the 35 times my 5 iron or driver times 28, I should play around 7000. My home course currently tips out at 6400 but it’s under discussion to reopen the tips at 6800.
Play whatever tees you enjoy the most. Enter your legit scores to track your handicap.
That’s all you ever need to do.
The only way you can play the wrong tees is if they’re too far back.

I agree mostly. Playing too far forward takes a lot of clubs out of my hands and brings more hazards into play. Too far back and you’re definitely holding up the course. It’s a fine line.
@Riley
You can look at it as the forward tees taking clubs out of your hands or putting new ones in.

The new clubs in my hands are 7/9 irons. I’m not lacking practice in those.
@Riley
that’s a lot of 9 irons to carry. /s
I think they mean that when playing the forward tees you don’t need to hit driver all the time. Especially when it brings trouble into play.
It’ll give you more chances to hit your woods and long irons because you’re laying up off the tee.
Playing the forward tees are also great for a confidence boost and working on your short irons and inside 100-yard feel/scoring.
@Blaine
I’ve tried it and didn’t enjoy it. I don’t mind playing executive courses but I’m not into playing executive length on courses which are not designed for it.

that’s fine. Just saying it’s good practice.
@Blaine
No disagreement.
6400-6700 is my sweet spot. I mix up white and blue.

I’m a 7 … 6400-6800 is very comfortable for me … my spot I guess …
There’s two really decent ladies in my Building … I played a handful of rounds with them last year upper tees … take 5 iron down …
There’s a course tough track I get to play half a dozen times a year or so … only plays 6240 … par 71 … some risk and reward holes … most clubs in the bag get hit there … love playing there … not about Length … finding good spots to leave it …
I play within myself … makes the game enjoyable.
I’m playing 5400 yard tees. I’m lucky to hit a drive over 200 yards.

Fair, I play with a lot of guys in your drive range, they hit driver I hit 5 iron.
Playing off a 14 and I can hang out around 6200/6300 just fine but it has not been lost on me that many of the most fun rounds I’ve ever played have been down around 5500/5600. I’d say if you’re not regularly finding yourself within 7/8 iron or less for second shots on par 4s you’re probably playing a little further back than would be best.
5,700-6,000 yards with no par 4’s over 400 yards or par 3’s over 200 yards unless they are downhill. Also depends on if it’s a course that usually plays soft or firm. I’m fine with yardage over 6,000 if the course is firm; if it’s soft, no way.
My home course is 7,200 from the tips. As long as my driver goes straight, I can usually manage. But man, if I am out of line off the tee, holes can really turn into blow-up holes. I struggle to shoot below 85, but can usually break 90.
I only play from tips 10% of the time though. Usually play the course at around 6,600 - much more enjoyable experience. I stay in the high 70s low 80s from that yardage.
@Darby
Yeah I could see it, one duffed drive or offline shot is a long way home.
I personally enjoy playing all courses from the tips and especially love if it’s close to 7000. I’m also a very long hitter though so I like the challenge. I think 6700 is perfectly long and challenging if you are only 250ish off the tee.
@Lake
Yeah I’m 260 carry with driver, 280 average total in summer. This time of year with cold and wet, I’m lucky to be averaging 250-yard drives. My home course is sea level, ocean adjacent and windy. This time of year there is no roll; where you land is where your hitting your next shot from. The argument for playing the tips is, it’s where courses are designed from. Even playing the blues at my home course opens up landing areas for me.
