What Constitutes a High Handicap?

Hello guys…

I’m new to golf and curious about what is typically considered a high handicap. Am seeking clarification on this topic.

Here are my questions:

  1. Definition: In golf, what range of handicap is generally considered high?
  2. Impact: How does having a high handicap affect one’s game and participation in tournaments?
  3. Improvement: What are some effective strategies for lowering a high handicap?
  4. Community Perspective: From your experience, how do golfers and clubs view players with high handicaps?

I will appreciate any insights or personal experiences you can share regarding high handicaps in golf.

I would consider my index of roughly 21 to be a high handicap. Having said that, I outplay a lot of golfers, especially the ones I play with. Even though I strictly adhere to the regulations, my average score has decreased by five strokes annually.

Over the past year and a half, I managed to drop from 24.5 to 18.3, which I’ve always seen as quite high. I agree with you though, compared to most golfers out there, we’re better than most golfers.

A high golf handicap is generally considered to be 20 or above. This means the golfer scores around 20 strokes over the course par. High handicaps are often seen among beginners and less experienced players, indicating more room for improvement in their game. The maximum allowed handicap for men is 36.4, and for women, it’s 40.4.
