I’m a pretty good golfer (9 or 10 handicap), and I’m looking to improve my game a bit more. I’m consistent in most areas, but my chipping needs work. I like practicing putting because I can see the results, but I get bored and lose focus with chipping after about 20 minutes. Plus, my lower back starts to hurt since I’m 6’6" and bending over a lot. Do you have any favorite chipping drills or games that you could share with me? I want to avoid chipping for hours and would prefer to move around to avoid bending over too much. Thanks for your suggestions!

Chipping blues got you down? Don’t worry I got you back @Barbara
Here is how you Fix it!
- Beat boredom: Set up targets at different distances and walk between them for each chip. Keeps you moving and focused!
- Challenge yourself: Play a solo round where you chip up and down for par from short distances. Hone that distance control!
- Save your back: Practice chipping from different distances against a wall to avoid constant bending.
- Spice it up: Try chipping from uneven ground around the green. Keeps things interesting and tests your technique.
Happy chipping!

What are some fun chipping games for golf?
Here are some quick games:
- Closest to the Pin: Classic competition, closest chip wins.
- Up & Down: Chip from fringe, then put out in 2 strokes. Low score wins.
- Chipstack: Knock down a pyramid of balls with chips. Most balls down wins.
- Horse (chipping version): Miss a chip, get a letter. Spell HORSE and you lose!
- Target Practice: Hit buckets or hula hoops with chips for points.
Chip Stack Challenge: Set up a little pyramid of golf balls and see how many you can chip over the pyramid without knocking any down. You can adjust the difficulty by changing the number of balls or the distance you chip from.
Here are some dynamic chipping drills to enhance your technique while ensuring an enjoyable practice session:
Interactive Chipping Drills:
- Up-and-Down Challenge: Place targets at various distances (10-30 yards) and aim to chip close to each one, followed by sinking the putt. Rotate between targets to maintain momentum and engagement.
- Target Grid Chipping: Create a grid on the practice green using chalk or spray paint, with designated target squares. Chip from a set distance, aiming for specific squares within the grid to enhance accuracy and concentration.
- Versatile Lie Practice: Experiment with chipping from different lies such as bare, rough, downhill, and uphill. Explore various areas of the practice area to encounter diverse lies, incorporating movement and mastering various chip shots.
- Distance Mastery Challenge: Arrange multiple targets at identical distances. Challenge yourself to chip using diverse swing lengths or techniques to achieve consistent distances. This activity sharpens your sense of feel and distance control without repetitive motions.
Entertaining Chipping Games:
- Closest to the Pin: Compete with friends by taking turns chipping towards a target. The participant with the closest shot earns a point. Vary the distance or choose new targets in each round to maintain excitement.
- Chipping Horse: Similar to the classic basketball game, use successful chip-ins or proximity to the hole to accumulate points and determine the winner. Injecting a competitive spirit adds intensity to the practice session.
- Time Trial: Set a timer for a specific duration (2-5 minutes) and strive to execute as many successful chips as possible within that timeframe from a predetermined distance. This time-sensitive challenge introduces pressure and ensures a brisk yet stimulating practice experience.
mmmh ,NO The same shot repeatedly is not the most effective way to improve. Playing good golf is about being able to assess distances, landing areas, trajectory, and then executing the shot accurately.
