Hey golfers…
I’m trying to break 220 yards with my woods, but I’m struggling to get that extra swing speed. I know technique plays a big role, but I’m looking for some specific tips or drills to help increase my speed.
What are some exercises or changes in my stance or grip that might help? Any recommendations on equipment adjustments or training aids would be great too!
Have you thought about just swinging harder?
I have, but it feels like I’ve hit a wall with my swing.
Have you thought about not swinging at the wall? Maybe try positioning yourself so your club face doesn’t hit it directly.
Maybe try swinging at a bean bag—like a heavy one. Or if you want to go old school, use a tire
Try and check out the swings of tour pros, one thing they all do is treat their downswing like a whip. They pack almost all their “power” into the last moments of their swing.
So, basically, you need to keep more shaft lean right up to impact and try to whip through the ball (like you’re trying to throw your club through impact). This will not only boost your clubhead speed but also lower your dynamic loft, which can really help increase your distance.

Like I said, you need to feel more of a throw with the clubhead instead of dragging it with your hands.
Right now, you’re not using any of the power you’re generating. You should work on getting your trail arm to straighten out and let the clubhead release past you at impact. In your follow-through, your arms should be extending, not stuck to your body.
Try some one-arm swings where you focus on extending your arm after you hit the ball, especially your trail arm. It should feel totally differen
Besides your swing, I’ve got a few questions. Are you talking about hitting on the course or at the range? Most range balls go about 10% shorter, so if you’re hitting 200 at the range, you could be hitting 220 on the course.
What are the weather conditions like? I noticed someone wearing gloves, so I’m guessing it’s under 50°F. Using an online calculator, if you’re hitting it 207 at 45 degrees, that would translate to about 220 at 75 degrees.
As for your swing, it looks pretty good but maybe not perfect. The ball seems to stay low, so it might be a bit back in your stance. I’d check your ball position and try using some foot spray on your club to see if you’re hitting the ball in the center of the face.
It was 60 degrees that day with a little wind, which is nice after being in the 100s for months. The guy in the video was wearing his golf glove. I’m hitting 220 on the range, so I’m guessing it’s about the same on the course with my 7 wood on a par 5. I don’t have a range finder yet, but thanks for the advice
