Tips for Producing Backspin on Shots Within 50 Yards

Hey all…

I’ve been working on hitting a cut from under 50 yards to get some backspin, but instead of that, I keep spinning the ball sideways. It’s frustrating because I really want to achieve that backspin.

What are your best tips for pulling this off? I’d love to hear any advice or techniques you have …Thanks.

Use a ball that spins more, and go for a steeper angle of attack with more speed.

If you’re hitting a cut, the ball will produce cut spin. You’re more likely to get backspin on straight shots…

Why not just run it up like most amateurs do? Instead, you’re trying to hit past the flag and hoping it comes back, which could leave you with a downhill putt if it doesn’t?

I don’t even think pros would go for that shot because nobody wants to risk that downhill putt.

I don’t think you can actually bring a shot back from 50 yards after it lands. Sure, you can use backspin to make it check quickly, but I’m not sure you can do what you’re asking for.

I’m finding that intentionally hitting the fringe or rough at a muni that isn’t always well-kept doesn’t usually give me a reliable bounce.

You need a ball that spins, plus a lot of loft and a downward angle of attack. But even then, you probably still won’t pull it off. This is elite player stuff

I find it helps to hold my release, keep the trajectory low with a high-lofted club, and that way, it spins a lot more.

All wedge shots will have backspin.

If you’re talking about the kind that will stop or even “back up” (), you’ll probably be out there for a while. That’s a tough one.

You’ll need the softest, spiniest ball, a brand new wedge, and perfect conditions, plus a technique that leaves almost no room for error.
