One Year Progress—From Trying to Thriving!

Bro what, I was a 110 avg 2 years ago and am trying to be below 100 avg this year with my PR being a 93. How the hell lol

It all comes down to putting the time in and making sure you do it correctly. With proper practice and playing enough, dropping that much in a year isn’t crazy.

@Reagan
One thing I see from weaker golfers is an unwillingness to be uncomfortable. When you make a change, it’s going to feel terrible for a little while. I got paired up last week with a guy who’s been golfing for 30 years and has only broken 90 a single time. But he chokes down 4 inches, has his right completely under the grip, presses the shaft a foot forward at address, and then aims 70 yards right. Had this guy just learned proper grip and stance, he would have been wildly uncomfortable for a little while, but he would be breaking more than once in his life.

@Reagan
Biggest hurdle for me has been just ‘advancing the ball’ or ‘getting back in play’ after a bad shot, instead of trying to make up for it.

“Don’t follow a bad shot with a bad mistake.” Best advice ever.

It’s all time. I started getting serious about getting better last June because ‘just being on the course’ stopped being fun if I’m never getting off the tee and scoring 125+. I’m breaking 100 now. Last 2 rounds were 91 and 94. But I also hit 100-200 balls a day in the garage, short game and putting drills, hit the range or course once a week regardless of weather. I’m not naturally athletic, so if I want to get to the 70s, I need to practice with purpose constantly.

@Layne
See I thought I got to this point when I went 6 rounds between 93-97 in a row. Then this game fiercely reminded me how tough it can be and I ended the year with a 102 avg score. Goal is to beat this average and have more than 50% of my scored under 100 this year but started off with a 101.

Glad I’m not alone, hahah! I get green with envy seeing this stuff. Taking at least a monthly lesson, hitting the range at least once a week on average and playing a round usually 2x a month and still fighting for my life to break 100…

Chipping in on 18. Nice work.

Thanks, it was about a 30 footer on the fringe. Hate putting off the fringe; I always try to bump and run instead.

Padraig Harrington’s tips on club face control just clicked for me. I liked how he wasn’t overly technical.
So Padraig for my swing and Golf Sidekick for course management/mindset.

Wow, congrats! Did you play more rounds in 2024 vs previous years?

Thank you! Oh yeah, it wasn’t even close. I started again in 2023, and I’d go every month or so, then decided if I’m gonna spend all this time/money, I might as well get good at it. And now I’m full-blown addicted.

Impressed you’re getting more GIRs than FIRs. I’m more like 60% FIR and 20% GIR lol.

So you’re saying there’s a chance!!!

You know you count a gimme as a stroke, right?

Man, I can make that spread in a weekend.

Good golf lessons are worth it. You can hit 100 balls a day, but if you aren’t doing it right, it won’t help. Lessons helped me go from breaking 90 a couple of years ago to breaking 70. If there’s a GolfTec near you, I would definitely suggest it. No, I don’t work for GolfTec.
