Lydia Ko Crowned Champion in Queen City

It’s her 22nd win on tour! She is just marvelous to watch. Jeeno and Hae-ran put up a great fight too! Loved watching the rounds unfold.

Shoots 63 with 1 eagle and 7 birdies, her lowest round of the year in the final round. Wins by 5 after being down by 2 with 10 holes to go. Lydia just won’t stop!

She’s unreal! I’m sad I missed her eagle; I’ll have to find the highlight.

That was the moment she broke the tie! A two-shot swing on that 11th hole.

Just watched it! Wow! What a player. Love the confidence she has with her drives—she makes it look easy.

Yeah, I think this is her best final round I’ve seen her play, outside of majors, of course. 24 putts is crazy in the final round.

A true ambassador for the game. I followed her around on Friday. Her caddie gave a signed ball to a kid between holes, and after shooting a 66, he gave balls to nearby volunteers.

She has always done that with volunteers. She keeps a sharpie in her bag and signs a bunch of balls for them after each round.

I love that! That’s so awesome. I’m sure the kid was beaming—same for the volunteers!

Crazy run she’s on.

Finally getting that last point for the Hall of Fame really took the pressure off, which seemed to be bothering her for at least a year. She’s playing so free now.

She’s pretty good!

Is this the best retirement season an athlete has ever had? Besides maybe MJ’s first and second retirements.

When did she announce retirement?

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. There’s been no formal announcement. She had a soft target of retiring by 30, and she’s only 27 now. But that was all before clinching the Hall of Fame and her current hot streak.

Exactly why I asked. Been watching her for years, and I’m aware of her interviews where she mentioned retiring by 30. But this is the second time in this thread I’ve seen this called her ‘retirement year.’

Yeah, I hear you. I was responding to the guy before you who declared her retirement with a lot of certainty. Today, during her post-round interview, she started talking about the career grand slam, totally unprompted. So if anything, the timeline seems to be pushing out.

Tom Abbot was talking about her career while she was on hole 17. He said something like: We don’t know how long she’ll be on tour, but we can expect great things from her for at least a few more years. I wouldn’t normally take a commentator’s word, but he talks to the players a lot. If she had mentioned retiring in private, he wouldn’t make a statement like that.

I think you’re confusing not going to the Olympics anymore with retirement.

She is such a legend and super cool to talk to.
