Its 2025 and I Broke 100 for the First Time!

What a beautiful day to achieve this milestone!

Ignore those GIRs; I was counting them wrong, lol. I thought if you had a putt for par it was in regulation but nope. Still super stoked for a 99.

Funny enough, you probably stumbled onto a better stat anyways. If you always have a putt for par, you’re in the running to break 90. I’ve borrowed the “GIRP” stat — “Green or fringe In Regulation Plus one”. Notice that most GIRP holes are bogey or better. It’s a good target for a bogey golfer to maximize. Congratulations!

@Lin
Absolutely. The best way to break 100 is to add one to each hole as your goal. Make your ‘GIR’ plus one as well. Par 4s become Par 5s. On in 3 is a GIR. Eventually, you get better at it regularly (and ideally have fewer blow-ups), leading to scores in the 90s. Less stress if you don’t have to go for it on every hole. And with practice, especially on familiar courses, you’ll know which holes can yield actual GIRs and start making more Pars (which feels like a birdie). Then if you’re like me, you end up confident you can shoot under 80 because you’ve done it a few times but still find some higher scores now and then that ruin your week, and I’m definitely not bitter at all.

Now to 90! It’s hard but simple. Shooting 90 and below is mostly about minimizing damage. If you keep it in play and avoid the blow-up holes, it’s surprising how doable it is. I usually shoot around 92-94 but have hit 88 twice. Those 88 rounds felt like I played worse but only had a blow-up on one hole. For me, getting in play off the tee is more than half the battle.

@Cai
My driver is a crapshoot, lol. It’s either 250 and straight or a massive slice. That’s my biggest issue right now. I have a lesson Thursday, and I’m hoping we can find something that creates some consistency off the tees.

@Cai
Congrats man! Sounds like you and I share similar golf problems. Here’s how I fixed my driver swing: Look closely at the shape of your lead wrist at the top of your backswing… the secrets lie there.

@Cai
Keep in mind you don’t have to hit your driver off every tee box. If a lot of your shots go OB or into trouble, then your driver is costing you more strokes than it’s gaining. People often claim “strokes gained” says distance off the tee is most important, but that’s true only if the ball lands in play. Avoiding penalties, especially OB, has the largest impact on scoring. Don’t hesitate to tee off with a wood, long iron, or even mid-iron on narrow or scary holes. If you see a wide-open fairway with no trouble, that might be a good time to rip the driver. But on narrow holes with OB or hazards where your drive would likely end up, it’s best to use a more reliable club.

@Jo
This is definitely a mindset I need to adopt. I’m a lot more consistent with my 4-hybrid. I’m playing again tomorrow and will keep this in mind for those blow-up holes. Thanks for mentioning this!

Check up top. 36 in is the gold and white tees, 35 in for the blues and reds.

But 12 + 35 = 47…

But 12 + 35 = 47…

Front 9: 52: Par 36, +16

Back 9: 48: Par 36, +12

Overall: 100, Par 72, +28

You shot 100.

@YukiJane
Par 71 in the top right.

I see that now. I saw the two 36s on the bottom and added them to the +16 and +12.

Well done OP :ok_hand:

@YukiJane
I’m not OP, so I didn’t shoot 100. Use your context clues, bud. He was going off a par 35 for the back 9, meaning he teed off from reds/blues. So confidently wrong.
