Is not having one of the doors allowed? (Range Attendant)

We just got this picker from another golf course because ours has been broken since December, and it’s missing a door. I still have to go and pick. Can they even do this?? The range is extremely bumpy and hilly too … I do not feel safe.

How can I go about doing this?

Yeah, my range cart was rickety but I was protected. People straight up targeted me. I had fun with it with headphones on. I’d try to dodge them (stop suddenly) if I saw one coming.

The range picker I used growing up was a regular golf cart with a picker attachment connected to the front; it didn’t even have a windshield. That being said, it was very dangerous, and looking back, I wish I would have said something. Had many a ball hit the cart while I was picking. Guess I can call myself fortunate I never got injured. Now if it were me, I’d refuse to pick unless the range is completely empty, or they properly protect the range cart.

@Sable
We had that one day while the other one was getting fixed, but they did give me a hard hat! It actually was very handy since some guy hoseled on right at me and nailed the hard hat. The ball bounced into the roof and hit me in the collarbone. Still hurt like hell.

Bring a shield and hold it up while you drive. But seriously, a golf ball can mess you up in a very serious way. It’s okay to tell your boss this is asinine and you’d prefer not to die on a driving range. OSHA is also an option as someone has stated.

@Val
Can I just go straight to OSHA without telling her?

https://www.osha.gov/workers/file-complaint

You (or your representative) have the right to file a confidential safety and health complaint and request an OSHA inspection of your workplace if you believe there is a serious hazard or if you think your employer is not following OSHA standards. The complaint should be filed as soon as possible after noticing the hazard. A signed complaint is more likely to result in an onsite inspection. Visit the Workers Rights and Protections webpage to learn more about your rights.

Yes, she would have no idea if it was you, some golfer on the driving range, or anyone else.

@Val
Thank you! I will for sure consider doing this.

No problem, good luck out there.

@Val
But she will likely suspect it was OP.

You pissed someone off bigly to end up driving that.

I think so too :open_mouth::open_mouth: My bosses are big mad at me for taking time off and not cleaning every single part of a golf cart as if she knows the difference between an ultra clean golf cart and a normally cleaned golf cart.

@Arlen
Pro tip: don’t be the nail that sticks out. In any workplace, you should do the bare minimum that makes the bosses happy. Just the bare minimum, though.

I thought I was doing just fine until my boss lectured me for ten minutes on why I wasn’t cleaning the cart right and I should be using a sponge instead of a brush. Very hard to do the bare minimum when my boss expects, in her words, ‘100%’ that I am ‘shortchanging the company.’

@Arlen
Some bosses be wild. But if you like the benefits of free golf enough, then just use the sponge. Besides, my own two cents, a golf cart doesn’t deserve a toothbrush. A sponge will do.

Haha, I don’t even play golf or even get the chance to. No benefits! Yeah, I can see why she wants the sponge, but the brush is about as wide as the sponge. I think she’s just being nitpicky.

@Arlen
You don’t even get free play benefits!? Find a new course to work at. You’ll be treated much better.

As someone who rode those as my first two jobs, HELL NO!

The members’ kids loved seeing me get into the picker. Target practice and getting to annoy your teammate all in one go. You definitely need a door, bro! Golf balls hurt at any speed.
