Guess my brother in law scored a hole in one at 185 yards par 3 with a 6 iron after just over a year of playing

Man this is just like mine. Same distance, same club, second season playing with my own clubs. Tell him to enjoy it. Mine was 21 years ago, and I haven’t had another since

Well, the jerk store called, they are running out of you

And I had an affair with his wife

This shows that hole in ones are mostly luck, and much more common among beginners. Better golfers aim for a good landing spot for an easy putt while bad golfers top their shots, roll the ball 160 yards, hit the flag, and go in. At least that’s what I tell myself when I feel pathetic

@Blair
I once dunked the ball into the hole from 110 yards with a pitching wedge. Didn’t even touch the green, just went straight in. I was 3 months into playing golf

@Blair
That’s basically what happened on mine. Shot it straight into the woods with a wild hook, hit a hill next to the green, popped up, and rolled into the hole

@Blair
You know, don’t let anyone say you don’t have strong coping skills

@Blair
Almost had an albatross a couple weeks ago. Ball rolled right over the hole. That’s a great bragging point in the golf scene if you get one

I could hit my 6 iron about 150 yards until I learned to compress the ball. That took a lot of work. 185 is what I can do after a lot of practice. He must be learning fast

I’ll check that out. I imagine compression happens when you hit the ball at a certain angle

@Peyton
It occurs when you deloft the clubface into the ball. You turn a 6 iron into a 5 iron. That’s why pros hit their clubs so far. It’s more about clubface angle than just hitting down. You need to close the face to get your hands forward at impact and have shaft lean. Many people never learn this without lessons. A few tips can make a big difference

@SarahPutter
I learned that this year, and it significantly changed my game. A good shot felt strange at first, but now I make nice divots as my ball soars toward the pin about 60% of the time lol

Exactly. Most people never learn this, which is why golf feels so hard. Just hitting well doesn’t always mean you’ll start hitting the pin, haha what a sport

@Peyton
It’s really more of a mental trick; hitting ball first and ground second sounds easy, but it’s not. A YouTuber would likely explain this better. It’s worth the effort to learn

Focusing on hands first or hands forward through contact helped me improve my shaft lean and low point

Well at least you are with his sister. You’ve got that going for you

What if he is with OP’s sister? That’s a double whammy

Exactly, could be his brother-in-law’s first of two hole in ones today

Happy for him, but also not really
