Got my first fitting as an early graduation gift

Just do it. Here’s a good reason to get a new set.

Turns out swinging at 97 mph with a 7 iron isn’t typical, and I’ve been using regular shafts for all two years of golfing.

I gained 15 yards per iron and 30 on my driver. Plus, I brought my dispersion within 60 feet off the centerline.

My fitter didn’t expect me to improve by much, but after seeing my swing, he felt I wouldn’t stay a 20 handicap for more than 6 months because he noticed how regular shafts were bending like pool noodles.

PGA tour average is 90 with a 7 iron lol

Your swing speed will probably decrease as your handicap lowers.

Having almost 100 mph with a 7 iron isn’t needed.

I wish I swung slower. People said swinging slower would help my accuracy, but it only made my misses worse and clean hits go too high. I added back some speed and my accuracy became more consistent. I still miss sometimes, but it’s more predictable now. Hopefully, with the right clubs, I can lower my scores.

Mine’s like 78 mph… might explain why I only hit my 7 iron about 140 yards :unamused:

That’s perfectly fine! My brother has about 72 mph on his 7 iron and he’s hitting 140 total. The 70s are the average speed for most male golfers.

I always tell him: ‘the only person you’re competing against is yourself and the course, not me or your coworkers.’

@Micah
That’s good to hear!

I felt like I wasn’t hitting my yardage compared to my friends, one is a police officer who goes to the gym a lot and plays with P770s so he hits it pretty far, and the other has strong lofted game improvement irons. I’m using JPX919 forged irons, which are about the same as the P770s but weaker than the set from the package.

I’m trying to lift heavier weights this winter so I can get more distance. I’d like to get closer to a 230-240 yard driver carry instead of just 210.

@Cameron
Don’t just focus on lifting heavy. I do typical morning Army workouts and they help a lot. If you want to generate power in your swing, work on shoulder mobility, legs, and so on.

I’d argue that calisthenics are more important than weights for golf because clubs weigh only so much, while the swing is all about body movement.

@Micah
I know a lot of folks who hit their 7 iron 140 that would easily beat you in a match.

Of course—they’re good, and I know I’m not there yet.

I did my fitting before Thanksgiving and the fitters looked at me like I was joking when I thought it was a slow day.

By the end, we were just chatting while looking at my card, and I joked about possibly carrying 300 yards. I quickly dropped down from 9 degrees to 8 degrees, but I just couldn’t get the launch angle high enough, even though I rolled out to 300+. I was really pushing hard on the last few shots and peaked around 120. Most drives were about 115-117.

@Micah
What shafts did they fit you with?

Super extra PGA Tour stiff obviously

Fujikura Ventus Black 6X for the driver, Hzrdus Black for the 3 wood, KBS Tour 130 X for the irons and wedges, and a Double Bend putter shaft with a pistol grip

A lot of folks in this forum hate on speed, but better players go after it.
Ignore the negativity and keep hitting the gym and smashing the ball.

Yeah, I realized I wasn’t typical when the fitters thought my numbers were crazy.
I think the hate is mostly from envy since I’ll probably be the guy who can actually carry 300 yards after practice.

Nice PXGs! I’m also a big fan of PXG.
Once you reach single digit handicap, or even sooner with your swing speed, I’d recommend switching to forged cavity backs. I love mine. They are great for slower swing speeds, but they have hot spots on the face that can make distance control tricky. It tends to be more noticeable the faster you swing. Just so you know, my 8 iron usually goes around 185 but can jump to 195 sometimes.

@YukiJane
Yeah, they warned me about that during the fitting. I chose the Gen6 XP for a bit more forgiveness compared to the P heads. My brother has the Black Ops.

I got fit into these with my swing speed in mind so the shafts can handle it. Eventually, I’d like to transition from players distance to a players/cavity back style.

But I might just go for Mizuno blades as a joke because why not.

Wow, that’s amazing!

Thanks! I’m glad I went with double chrome, but the black was tempting too.

Congrats!
