Hey guys, I have been obsessed with golf since I started playing seriously earlier this year. I don’t always keep score, but breaking 100 would be a good round for me. After my last lesson, my instructor told me not to come back with my old, standard-length clubs. They’re too short for my 6’4" height.
I’ve had a couple of iron fittings this week and I’m torn between game-improvement irons (like Stealth) and players’ distance irons (like P790). I hit both well in the fittings, but I noticed the P790s are a bit less forgiving on mishits. The Stealths seem better for my current game, but the strong lofts are a turnoff since I already hit the ball fairly far. Plus, I have a mental block about carrying a 43° pitching wedge.
I have gotten great advice from friends who are much better golfers, but I’d love to hear your thoughts too.
Hey enthusiasts the best way to find the right irons for you is to try them out. Visit a golf shop and get fitted for clubs that match your swing and goals.
When I was fitting for new irons, I faced a similar dilemma with game-improvement versus players’ distance irons. At 6’4", I needed clubs that matched my height and swing. I found that game-improvement irons, like the Stealths, offered more forgiveness and were better suited to my current skill level, especially since I’m still working on consistency. The players’ distance irons, like the P790s, felt great but were less forgiving on mishits. I had a mental block about stronger lofts too, especially with a 43° pitching wedge, even though I hit the ball far. My advice is to choose the irons that best fit your current game and comfort level, and remember, it’s better to have forgiving clubs now as you continue to improve.
