Donald Ross, I apologize for cursing your name on your courses. But thanks for creating fun golf shots. Happy Wednesday.

Same goes for Pete Dye. I often mutter ‘screw you Pete’ a few times a round when playing Wintonbury Hills in CT.
That guy was obsessed with deep holes and elevated greens.
@Rey
His son’s course in MD is like that, but with railroad ties. Miss the fairway by 6 inches… WHAM! Approach shot falls short… WHAM! Why are there giant pieces of wood there???

I think Pete at least starts off with an easy hole before the rest of the course beats me up. Good guy, Pete.
@Shannon
Birdied the first hole at Whistling Straits before getting beat up for the next 17.
And it’s Donald Ross, so you’re going to miss a lot of greens. At least, I do at our local Ross course, Dunedin CC in Florida.
Aim somewhere else! Ross never makes you aim for real trouble. He just gives you the chance to mess up if you want to.

Seeing the safe miss and hitting it are two very different things for me right now.

Bold of you to assume we have good aim, sir.
@FairwayFellow
Just putt it!
His course in KC starts with a 200-yard par 3. Second hole is a short par 4 with a 90-degree right turn, so you can’t use driver. Third hole is a super long par 5. Just mentally wears you down from the start.
You know who else is tough, Arthur Hills… Why is there a bunker the size of a shoebox on your course, sir?

It’s a shame so many of his famous courses are in Florida, and then he was asked to replicate them elsewhere. He did some great work outside Florida when given free rein.
This guy had a knack for putting fairway bunkers right in range of my driver.

I played a Donald Ross course in my first year of golf. I didn’t get all the hate for fairway bunkers before then. After that round, I understood…

Then don’t hit driver.
There’s nothing like a Donald Ross redan.
Bulle Rock in Havre De Grace, MD… there’s not a flat spot to be found.
Bunkers were tough at first, but after practicing a lot, the only issue now is the wear on my 58. Probably would feel different if all bunkers were coffin bunkers though.
My club is a Ross design. I’m sure it’s been remodeled, but a lot of the original Ross design is still there, like how there’s a bunker in play on every shot from every tee. It’s exhausting, mostly because I suck at golf.
