AITA For calling someone out for not recording his shots?

Played my 3rd round with a group of new golfers today, I’ve been playing a while but am a high handicapper still. The first time we played together I shot a 45 on a 9 hole and the man in question chirped up with “oooh just pipped you by one”.

I looked in disbelief thinking, yeah but how many drops did you have, but made no comment, all 3 new golfers had been taking a few drops, I didn’t mind so much, they’re new.

Cut to today and the 4 of us are playing a different 9 hole, I’m playing really well, the other guys are doing ok. We come to a par 4, I’m on the green in 3 and the other guy goes into the water, twice, ends up getting onto the green, lines up his putt and says “this is for 4”. I couldn’t help myself, I turned round and said “4? You’ve got 4 shots just going in and out of that pond”

He says “yeah but I don’t count them like you do and it’s not like we’re playing for money”

I made a couple of other similar comments afterwards and apparently he had a right sulk in the bar afterwards. I shot a 10 over 41, he shot a 45 but I still think it was more like a 50.

Was I a dick for calling him out? Should I just let him score how he wants and ignore it next time?

I never care what people say they shot until they wanna start talking shit about their score compared to mine. That guy crossed a line when he said his bullshit score was better than yours. At that point you’re free to call him out.

If the bloke says he beat you, and he cheated while you played it straight, he should get all the smoke.

If you’re not gambling with someone, don’t worry about what they count as their score… But if someone is chirping you, for sure give them shit about the way they’re scoring.

I agree with several others. Keep your score how you like, until you start trash talking. Then, you better bet we are counting correctly.

I don’t think you’re an asshole, but I also think you’ve made your point and should let it go from here on out. As long as you aren’t playing for money, let him record his score however he wants.

Honestly yes YTA. You’re both new golfers shooting way over par and you are still beating him.

If you aren’t going to keep score correctly with integrity, then don’t keep score at all.
