96 yesterday with 43 putts. What's your favorite LAG putting drills?

I go to the green 2-4 times a week for 20 minutes to an hour, working on my putting. I usually do well with lag putting and gate drills, and I’ve been focusing a lot on speed lately. I thought I was improving, but yesterday was my worst-performing performance of the year! :weary:

I had five 3-putts and two 4-putts. I couldn’t believe it. I usually only have a few 3-putts on a bad day, but this was atrocious.

Here are the lag-putting drills I do:

  • Hit 50 putts from different spots from 20 to 60 feet just to get a feel.
  • Ladder drills where I hit a putt to 10 feet, then try to get each putt 2-3 feet past the previous ball.
  • Putt from the center of the green to the fringe, trying to get the ball to stop right against the fringe.
  • Lay an alignment stick 2 feet behind a hole and try to get the ball past the hole without hitting the stick.

These drills seem to go well, but on the course, I start hitting 20-foot putts only 10 feet… :triumph::golf: Any tips?

It seems like short putts might be a challenge for you. I try to keep putting simple by focusing on hitting the putter squarely, which is just as crucial as it is with a full swing. If your putts are inconsistent, you might be cutting across the ball, causing a lot of variation. Any extra movement can also hurt your consistency, so watch how the pros keep their bodies still. Personally, I like to use three balls for long putts and aim to finish in six strokes. You might also find it helpful to practice with a friend and set up putting contests, which can mimic the pressure of actual play.

Try hitting a few putts while focusing on the hole, like Spieth sometimes does. I have noticed that this approach helps me get the speed right a bit faster.
