3 wood vs 3 hybrid - Opinion

3 Wood vs 3 Hybrid: do you carry one, the other, or both?

So last year, I got a new set of golf clubs. It has a 3 Wood (15°) and a 3 Hybrid (18°). Do I need both of these or are they kind of the same thing?

The 3 Wood and 3 Hybrid serve different purposes in a golf bag, and whether you carry one or both depends on your playing style and the courses you play. Here’s a breakdown of their differences and uses:

  • 3 Wood:
    • [Length: Typically the second longest club in the bag, with a shaft usually between 42 and 43 inches]
    • [Loft: Generally lofted between 14 and 16 degrees
    • [Design: Larger clubhead, shallower profile, more rounded shape, and bigger sole]
    • Use: Ideal for longer shots from the fairway, out of shorter rough, or as a backup to the driver on tight holes. [It tends to fly lower and further than a 3 Hybrid and will roll out more in drier conditions]
  • 3 Hybrid:
    • [Length: Shorter than a 3 Wood, with a shaft measuring around 40 inches]
    • [Loft: A direct replacement for a 3 iron, available in lofts between 20 and 22 degrees]
    • [Design: More compact and iron-like, with a higher toe, slimmer sole, and a deeper face]
    • Use: Easier to hit than long irons, offering a higher launch, greater peak height, and softer landing on the fairway or green.

In essence, a 3 Wood is meant for distance, while a 3 Hybrid is designed for accuracy and playability. If you’re confident with your long irons and looking for extra yards, the 3 Wood is a good choice. If you struggle with long irons and need a club that’s easier to hit and more forgiving, the 3 Hybrid might be the better option.

Some golfers carry both to have options for different situations on the course.
If you have room in your bag and feel that each club serves a unique purpose for your game, carrying both could be beneficial.
Ultimately, it’s about what works best for you and your golfing strategy.
